What does communicating in a healthy way look like? What do you have to do in order to communicate in a healthy manner? Here are some tips that you can try.
- Say what you mean, and mean what you say. Sometimes, we don’t choose our words very carefully, so it’s important that we really think things through before we speak. If you’re using a messenger system or a text, it’s even more important, because you lose body language. Think through what words you are going to use and be mindful of what you’re saying.
- Speaking of body language, make sure that your body language matches what you’re saying. Sure, you may say that you’re interested, but putting your chin on your hand or looking away at your phone makes it seem like you don’t really care about what’s going on.
- Make sure that you focus on your nonverbal communication at times. Everyone has their own “language” that they speak when it comes to feeling loved. If the other person feels special when you touch their arm or hold their hand, make sure you do that. If you enjoy spending time with them, let them know that. Remember, communication isn’t just about the words that come out of your mouth.
- Be patient when you’re talking about sensitive topics. Sometimes, people get heated and don’t mean to. And, just because you get excited about something doesn’t mean that you’re necessarily angry about what is going on. You are just passionate and feel really strongly about what is going on. But, keep your passion to a dull roar – otherwise, you could intimidate the person(s) that you are talking to, or you could end up escalating the conversation and turning it into an argument without meaning to.
